About this place

Built for two, with room to breathe breathe

The R Apartment sits at Falkensteinerstrasse 16c, a quiet residential street on the south side of Solothurn. The building is recent, clean-lined, and functional in the way good Swiss construction tends to be. You walk in and the first thing you notice is the light. The apartment faces out onto a balcony wide enough for a small table and two chairs, and in the morning the sun fills the living space without any effort from you.

At 50 square metres the layout is honest. There is a double bedroom with good storage, a bathroom with a proper shower, and an open living and kitchen area that does not pretend to be bigger than it is but does not feel cramped either. The kitchen is equipped for real cooking, not just reheating. Surfaces are clean, modern, and low-maintenance. The furniture is simple and considered. Nothing is fussy. Nothing demands your attention. That is the point.

Downstairs there is a gym, which is unusual for a property of this size and a genuine advantage if you like to keep a routine while travelling. There is also dedicated parking, which matters in Solothurn where street spots near the old town fill up fast, especially on market days. You drive in, park, and forget about the car until you leave.

The neighbourhood itself is residential and walkable. A few minutes on foot takes you to a small supermarket for morning groceries. Ten minutes more and you are crossing the Aare river into the old town, with its baroque facades, its fountains, and its surprisingly good restaurant scene for a city of this size. Solothurn calls itself the most beautiful baroque city in Switzerland, and while that is a bold claim, it is not entirely wrong. The Weissenstein ridge rises to the north if you want a proper hike, and the train station connects you to Bern in about half an hour. The apartment works as a base, not a destination, but it is a very good base.

The Experience

A day here looks like this this

You arrive in the late afternoon. The parking spot is right there, no circling the block, no guessing. You take the lift up, open the door, and the apartment is bright and clean and ready. Drop your bags. Open the balcony door. The air is fresh and the street below is quiet.

Morning comes and you make coffee in the kitchen. Real coffee, with the small moka pot or the filter machine on the counter. You take it out to the balcony with whatever pastry you picked up from the bakery near the supermarket the evening before. The sun warms the railing. Neither of you is in a hurry.

Later you walk into town along the river. The Aare is impossibly green in the right light. You cross one of the old bridges, wander through the cobblestone streets, stop at a cafe on the Hauptgasse. Maybe you climb the tower of St. Ursus Cathedral for the view across the Jura foothills. Maybe you just sit and watch the fountains.

Back at the apartment in the late afternoon, one of you uses the gym while the other reads on the sofa. You cook something simple for dinner with ingredients from the Coop down the road. The balcony works for an aperitif as the light changes. The evening is yours, unhurried and unscripted. That is the shape of a stay here. Nothing forced, nothing missing.
